Save gas AND money by Neighborhood Motors
Decreasing home prices, increasing foreclosures and inflation, state and local budget crunches, and of course $4 gas and rising have many asking is it or isn’t it a recession? News and trends out of the auto industry in particular might be giving you a general sense that maybe you should shore up your finances by trading in your gas-guzzler for a gas-sipper. While you should always be on the look out for ways to save cash, focusing only on gas savings is generally not the way to do it. You need to know the math for your particular situation.
More often than not, trading in a gas-guzzler for something more fuel-efficient does not make one bit of sense, even with $4 gas. Edmunds has come up with a little tool that will show you if making such a trade makes sense. The example they use is typical: “A consumer trades in a four-year old GMC Yukon, worth $13,483, for a new $21,647 Toyota Prius. The difference is $8,164. If the consumer drives 1,200 miles per month and gas costs $4.07 per gallon (national average), the monthly fuel savings will be $201.34. While this may seem attractive, it will take 41 months to pay back the additional cost of the Prius over the trade-in value of the Yukon.” That means almost 3 1/2 YEARS for your budget to recover from your decision to trade in the gas hog for a Don’t-Believe-The-Hype hybrid.
What are the chances, you think, that the above consumer will be wanting to get something else after about 4 years? Pretty good is right. What Edmunds’ Gas Mileage Savings Calculator shows is that trading something in for a new car can be an absolute disaster money-wise. Spend some time with the tool, you can play around with all different models, miles covered, fuel prices. You’ll see that there aren’t too many scenarios involving a new car that works out in your budget’s favor.
So gas savings is not a reason to trade-in for a new car. But there is a situation where you can come out ahead gas and money wise. That is when you buy a 2,3,4 year old private party car. Here’s an example: You trade in a four-year old Yukon XL Denali worth $17,993, for a two-year old Honda Civic worth $14,371. The difference is $3,622. That amount of cash right there is more than 2 years worth of gas. On top of that you save $214 per month on gas versus the old car. Now that is a smart decision, regardless of gas prices.
