Which 2010 Hybrid Is Better?

The realease of the Insight has ruffled a few feathers due to its price tag.  With a MSRP of $23,500 on the Prius is a few thousand dollars more expensive than its main competitor; the Honda Insight, which has a MSRP of $19,800. The cheap base price give the Insight the title of most affordable hybrid in the U.S. 

The Insight offers an ECO Assist system which enhances fuel economy further by controlling acceleration rates and helping the driver drive learn how to drive more economically.The Honda has a driving setting that will either increase the performance of the vehicle or decrease the perfrmance in the hope of getting better fuel economy.An electric motor gives the engine a nice boost, this system is called the integrated motor assist or IMA. Th IMA system is cheaper to manufacture, lighter than the original, and adds to the overall interior space. Variable Valve Technology is used in the Insight motor which also helps perfomance.  Features included on some Insight models are: alloy wheels, cruise control, 6 speaker audio with USB interface, steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, Stability Assist, and a satellite navigation system with voice recognition. The Toyota has been the reigning king of the hybrid market for years now, but with the low price of the Insight, Honda is aiming to take away that title. 

Opposite of the Insight, the 2010 Prius offers a 160-hp 1.8L motor has a couple of different driving settings. These 3 moeds include the power mode which of course adds more power, the EV mode which allows the Prius to run on electricity alone, and the ECO mode which nets the best fuel economy.An accessory on the Prius that is aimed at driver safety is called the precollision system.Just set the PCS and the Prius will slow down by itself if the car ahead of you suddenly hits his brakes. Toyota has added some buttons to the wheel to make the driving experience a bit more safe.

Although the Honda is the cheaper of the hybrid competitors, the Prius has the better fuel efficiency and is noticeably larger than the Insight.  The Honda has a reported 40-city mpg, 43-highway, and a combined mpg of 41; while the Prius has mpg of 48-city, 45-highway, and 46 of combined mpg.  So, if you commute 20,000 miles per year (and gas costs $2.50 a gallon), the Toyota would only cost just over $1000 every year and the Honda would come in $200 more. So say you shell out that higher price for the Prius, yes you save 53 gallons of gas per year, but it will take 27 years of driving to recover that money via gas savings.  So although the Prius gets better gas mileage; the Insight overcomes that hurdle by having such a low MSPR!
