Good Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Reviews Give Film The Power-up
Read “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” reviews and also the overwhelming message is that the film is an explosive mix of comic book and video game culture. It’s a world with which veteran video game players – particularly fans of fighters like “Street Fighter” – are well familiar. Those who do not relate to the augmented reality of “Scott Pilgrim” are generally the very same critics who had difficulty tolerating the ultra-violent comic book film “Kick Ass”. Nevertheless, fans of both have usually had even more favorable things to say about the Pilgrim.
‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ reviews praise the power combo
New artistic forms are born from the fusion of a dizzying array of popular influences in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”. Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera of “Juno,” “Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist” and “Youth in Revolt”) is a young slacker who spends his time playing music in a band and looking for the love of his life. Scott is stuck between the eyes by Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), but can do little over it until he faces seven trials. These trials are Ramona’s “seven evil exes,” who Scott must defeat in kung-fu style before taking the hand of the young lady. It’s a simplistic plot ripped straight from a video game, and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” pays constant tribute to such games, comics, television shows and other pop-culture artifice in a dizzying fusion. Plot is secondary to the visual style. “Enjoy the ride” seems to be the mantra of critics with good things to say about Pilgrim’s progress.
Review fusion – A nerd feast
Joe Neumaier of the New York Daily News sees “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” as a blur of style over substance, nevertheless a romantic coming-of-age story that burns with a satisfying light in bright neon. It is a surreal mix that Film.com rightly tabs and on-the-mark for its intended audience of 20-somethings. The nerdiness of Scott Pilgrim himself is also quite appropriate to the video game loving nerdfest mix, says the L.A. Times.
Play on, Pilgrims
“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” rocks through the changes in an eye-and ear-pleasing blowout. As Sharkey puts it, “Though the fun is not so much in who wins or loses the girl — it is the playing that matters”. On the other hand, there’s the New York Post’s view of the film. He writes that “the movie just skitters this way and that (and) has a love affair with itself”. That ride may not be for everybody, but it captures its target audience with panache. Smith says that “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” is “all games, no joystick,” yet somewhere, quarters are stacking on the machine as viewers line up to play.
